CHAPTER 22

After spending time trying to track down the witnesses that had spoken to Miles and failing to reach anyone, I turned to easier pursuits. I sat in my mother’s car in the parking lot of the pub where they had found Trevor’s car. I could see the back patio of the bar as the late afternoon crowd of young professionals had started to gather for happy hour. I was about to interview Chris, the pub owner, when my cellphone rang.

“Cooper,” I said as I answered. “How’s New Orleans?”

“It’s creepy,” he said with a tension-filled laugh. “I have a crazy theory I want to run by you. Do you have a minute?”

Cooper never had crazy theories, so this should be good. “I’m about to interview the owner of the bar. We don’t have a scheduled time to meet, so I have all the time you need. What’s on your mind?”

“Is Shaw up there with you still?”

“I assume so. Why?”

“You know him better than I do. I’ve never even met the man. Do you think there is any way that Shaw could be involved in these murders?” Before I could rein in my shock and collect myself enough to respond, Cooper chastised himself. “I know it’s a stupid theory. I don’t even have much to go on. I was just speaking to this priest and he said Shaw wanted to meet the victim. I don’t know, Riley. There isn’t a lot about this case that makes much sense. There’s this reporter too—”

“Cooper, slow down,” I said, interrupting him. “I don’t think Shaw is an out-there idea. I said the same thing to Luke earlier today. He cautioned me that I was being swayed by my hatred for the guy. No matter what Luke said, I still think there’s something to it. What do you mean Shaw wanted to meet with the victim before he died?”

Cooper went into detail about the conversation with Fr. Frank, stopping every so often to see if I was still following along. When he finished, Cooper provided me with the details of his meeting with George Benoit, the reporter. The information George had gathered sounded more thorough than anything we had so far. To be fair, George had been involved longer than any of us.

When Cooper finished, he said, “There’s something off with Shaw. I’m sure you’ve noticed it. More than wanting fame or fortune. He’s speculating about these cases and calling it fact. Do you think he believes the things he says?”

“I don’t know,” I said evenly. “How did Shaw even know about Danny? Was he an exceptional student? Been involved in projects like these before? I don’t understand the connection. Did Shaw just pluck a random kid out of obscurity?”

“All unknown at this time. I only just found out the information. I left St. Louis Cathedral, found a park bench, and called you. I had to talk through it with someone.” Cooper dropped his voice low. “What if Shaw is the serial killer? He could be stalking out areas like New Orleans and then luring the boys to a meet place.
